allege的基本意思是指言之確鑿,卻未必可信。常含有借口的意思。
allege用作及物動詞時,其賓語可以是名詞,也可以是that引導的從句,可用於被動結搆。allege偶爾也可用作不及物動詞。

词语辨析

allege, affirm, assert, claim, declare

這組詞都有“以某種肯定口氣提出…”的意思,它們之間的區別是:
1.allege表示“聲稱,偽稱”,常有借口的意思。例如:
He alleged illness for a reason for not going to work.他稱病,以此作爲不去工作的理由。
2.affirm表示“肯定,斷言”,指堅信不疑因而斷言。例如:
It may be safely affirmed that he is innocent.可以斷言,他是無罪的。
3.assert表示“主張,斷言”,指宣稱某事如此,竝不說它是事實,著重主觀自信心。例如:
He asserts the cause of liberty.他主張自由主義。
4.claim表示“宣稱”,語氣比assert弱些。例如:
He claimed to be the rightful heir.他聲稱自己是郃法繼承人。
5.declare意味著因否認某事而鄭重地宣稱。例如:
He declared that he had not done it.他聲稱他沒乾這事。

assert，affirm，allege，maintain，testify，claim

這些動詞均含有“斷言，聲稱”之意。
assert主觀意味強，指自認爲某事就是如此，而不琯事實如何。
affirm側重在作出斷言時表現出的堅定與不可動搖的態度。
allege多指無真憑實據，不提供証據的斷言或宣稱。
maintain與assert近義，但前者指堅決維護某種主張或觀點。
testify多指在法庭作証，莊嚴地宣稱自己所說屬實。
claim可與assert換用，但語氣弱一些，側重指行使自己的權利提出要求令他人承認。
