常用用法

example的基本意思是“例子,实例”。引申可指“样品,范例”“榜样,楷模”,有时还可指“警告”“先例”等。
set sb an example〔set an example to sb〕的意思是“给某人树立榜样”; make an example of sb (for sth)的意思是“(因…)惩罚某人以儆效尤”。
for example的意思是“例如”或“譬如”,无论举出一个或几个例证, example都须用单数形式。常用作插入语,可缩写为e.g.。用了for example,就不宜再用etc.。

example, instance

这两个词都有“例子”或“实例”的意思,常可互换使用。例如:
He cited examples〔instances〕 in order to prove his statement.他举例证明自己的说法。它们之间的区别是:
1.example主要指在同类事物中举出一个具有代表性、典型性的“例子”,有“通例”的意思; instance则常指用一个单独的事实作为“例子”来说明一种广泛的道理或结论。例如:
She could quote hundreds of these examples.她可以举出许多这样的例证来。
You can't rely on her:for instance, she arrived an hour late for an important meeting yesterday.她这个人靠不住。举例说吧,昨天一个重要会议她就迟到了一个小时。
2.example通常多用于教育中,而instance则不一定。

example, model

这两者都可表示“榜样”,它们的区别是:example可以足资仿效的“好榜样”,也可以指引以为戒的“坏典型”; 而model一般指完美的、值得模仿的人或物。例如:
Make your father your model, and you will be a good man.以你的父亲为榜样,你会成为一个杰出的人。
